Prior to starting his consulting practice, Bob was President of Octavia Hill Association (1986-1997), a for-profit, Quaker-founded housing organization dating back to 1896, which promotes a socially-responsible mission while limiting dividends paid out to shareholders. Operating citywide throughout Philadelphias varied neighborhoods, Bob guided OHA in management of 300+ properties and development of 167 units of new and rehabilitated housing in Tioga, Point Breeze, and Port Richmond. This housing -- both rental and home ownership-- was created in 6 developments, utilizing a varying mix of city CDBG funds, Federal Home Loan Bank subsidies, foundation grants, federal low-income housing tax credits, and private equity infusion.
He was Executive Director of Neighborhood Development Alliance from 1980-1986, a start-up community development corporation in West Oak Lane in Philadelphia, building a multi-faceted program that grew to include rehabilitating vacant houses, counseling homeowners, and operating a toolbank that was projected to grow into a hardware store.
A native of Cincinnati, Bob came to Philadelphia to attend the University of Pennsylvania, where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1976 and a Masters of City Planning in 1977. In 1998, he was certified by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a Licensed Real Estate Salesperson.
